Attorney Julie Sparks
Julie Sparks practices exclusively in the area of Immigration and Nationality law. She handles all areas within immigration, including business-related visas and family-based immigration benefits, both domestically and through U.S. consulates abroad. She has represented immigrants from a wide array of backgrounds, including world renowned scientists, internationally acclaimed artists, religious leaders, green card lottery winners, corporate executives, refugees, and families from all walks of life. Her primary area of expertise is defending clients from deportation. She represents clients before the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, U.S. immigration courts, and U.S. Courts of Appeals.
Attorney Sparks’ work with African refugees during the Rwandan genocide led her to pursue a career in immigration law. She has successfully represented numerous victims of torture seeking political asylum in the U.S. Attorney Sparks has assisted many in obtaining green cards based on their status as victims of domestic violence. She is also presently serving as a pro bono attorney for The National Center for Refugee and Immigrant Children, an agency funded in part by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. She has assisted in the representation of many unaccompanied juvenile immigrants, many of whom were detained upon their crossing from Mexico to Texas. As a volunteer Legal Coordinator for the 2003 Immigrant Workers' Freedom Ride, Ms. Sparks assisted immigrants in joining together in a nation-wide protest and call for meaningful immigration reform to protect the rights of undocumented workers in this country. Ms. Sparks continues to participate in numerous volunteer efforts and events aimed at providing free and low-cost legal advice to immigrants in the Los Angeles area.
Ms. Sparks earned a Bachelor of Science in Education degree from Baylor University in May 1997. She obtained her Doctor of Jurisprudence (J.D.) degree from the University of Houston Law Center, where she was a recipient of the University of Houston Law Center's Public Interest Fellowship.
Ms. Sparks is a member of the American Bar Association, the Texas Bar Association, the Los Angeles County Bar Association, the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA), and the AILA Southern California Chapter. She currently serves as the Southern California AILA Co-liaison for Pro Bono initiatives. She previously served as the chapter liaison to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Success Stories:
2003: Attorney Sparks successfully prevented the deportation of a Congolese national who had been tortured at the hands of government officials overseas.
2003: Attorney Sparks successfully prevented the deportation of two nationals of Cameroon who had been persecuted by government officials overseas.
2006: Attorney Sparks successfully prevented the cancellation of a Filipino national’s Legal Permanent Resident status (green card), and thus prevented deportation. Attorney Sparks overcame charges of marriage fraud.
2006: Attorney Sparks successfully prevented the deportation of two Filipino nationals who had entered the U.S. fraudulently, but who had since maintained excellent moral character and who had made numerous positive contributions to the United States.
April 2006: Attorney Sparks successfully expedited the naturalization of a Filipino national who served in the U.S. military, and was facing deployment to Iraq.
January 2007: Attorney Sparks successfully prevented the deportation of two Indonesian nationals who feared persecution from terrorists in their home country.
February 2007: Attorney Sparks successfully prevented the deportation of a Mexican national who had lived in the U.S. for over two decades, and who had a U.S. citizen child.
August 2007: Attorney Sparks successful obtained legal status for a Filipino national who entered on a tourist visa and who overstayed that visa for many years.
October 2007: Attorney Sparks successful prevented the deportation of a Filipino national with a history of criminal problems, including a history of drug use.
March 2008: Attorney Sparks successfully prevented the deportation of a Belizean national with two U.S. citizen children.
April 2008: Attorney Sparks successfully prevented the deportation of a Mongolian national who suffered persecution on account of his sexual orientation.
April 2008: Attorney Sparks successfully adjusted the status of a Mexican national who had triggered the ten year bar after having remained in the U.S. unlawfully for more than one year.
April 2008: Attorney Sparks successfully adjusted the status of a Filipino national who was more than twenty years younger than her husband, the petitioner.
May 2008: Attorney Sparks successfully acquired Family Unity Benefits for a Mexican national who had lived unlawfully in the U.S. since he was a young child.
June 2008: Attorney Sparks successfully adjusted the status of a Filipino national accused of fraud by USCIS.
October 2008: Attorney Sparks successfully removed the conditions on residence for a Filipino national who had divorced his wife prior to filing.
November 2008: Attorney Sparks successfully prevented the deportation of an Indonesian national who overstayed his student visa years ago.
